A is for......ART

art

/a:t/

noun

~ the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

~ a skill at doing a specified thing, typically one acquired through practice.

Although the dictionary definition of Art is as a noun, for some artists, they would argue that it is actually a verb. For many, creating art is just something that they ‘need to do’, like breathing, to feel alive.

So, when does craft become art? Well, here’s the eternal debate! For me, craft is about honing a skill, learning from a master and practising techniques until they become second nature. Art is when you take what you have learned from crafting and make it your own and express your own thoughts and feelings through the work you produce. It may not necessarily be to everyone’s taste, but if it conveys meaning or challenges the viewer’s perception, then it is not just an object of creation and becomes more of an ‘experience’. The work of an artist who has honed their skills is instantly recognisable as theirs, even though each piece is unique: it is part of their personality. I believe everyone can be an artist; it takes a lot of work and dedication; but perseverance is the key. Don’t give up!
